All children who live within the Ngaio School enrolment zone are able to enrol at Ngaio School. From time to time the school may hold a ballot for places for out of zone students. Please contact the office for more information.

Enrolment packs are available from the school office and contain all the information required for enrolment.

Early notice

We appreciate early notice of likely enrolments as it assists in our planning.

You may pre-enrol at any time, ideally at least eight weeks prior to your child’s start date so they can be fully involved in the Kōwhai transition to school programme.

Parent information and transition to school

To help prepare you and your child for school, we run Parent Information Sessions and the Kōwhai Transition to School Programme.

See the relevant tab below for more information.

Stationery starter packs

Stationery starter packs are available at the school office for new entrants, or alternatively you can pick up a list of stationery items to purchase. The pack provides everything a new entrant needs for the classroom.

Clothing and sun smart hats

Sun smart hats  are compulsory in the summer months (Terms 1 and 4). You can buy Ngaio School sun smart hats from the school office or you can supply your own child’s hat as long as it is brimmed (or has a long side and back flaps) to shade the face, nose, neck and ears.

The only other dress requirement is that your child wears suitable footwear for outdoor activities, so no jandals. We recommend that everything is named. Ngaio School branded clothing  can be purchased from the office.

There are lots of different ways you can begin the enrolment process with Ngaio School. The outline below is for the most common and most complete process.

The standard enrolment process – for children who are turning five

  • Check if you live within the Ngaio School enrolment zone
  • Contact the school office to advise you’re intending to enrol your child – as early as you like, but preferably at least eight weeks before your child’s planned start
  • Book to attend a Parent Information Session and the Kōwhai Transition to School Programme.
  • Collect an enrolment pack from the school office
  • Complete the enrolment form and deliver to school with the supporting documents – at least eight weeks before the likely start date
  • Attend the Kōwhai Transition to School Programme with your child.
  • Purchase a starter stationery kit from the school office and a sun smart hat if your child doesn’t already have one
  • Agree on a start date.

We operate an enrolment zone, which means anyone residing within a specific area outlined in our zone map is automatically accepted at Ngaio School. From time to time the school holds a ballot for places for out of zone students. Please contact the office for information.

Ngaio School’s normal geographic zone includes all the streets within the area defined by these access points to Ngaio and shown on the below map.

  • North from the intersection of Kaiwharawhara Road and Old Porirua Road
  • East of the railway overbridge, which excludes Churchill Drive and includes Waikowhai Street
  • South of the midline of Lucknow Terrace. West of Cockayne Rd between Lucknow Terrace and Calcutta Street. Both sides of Cockayne Road from the south corner of Calcutta Street through all increasing numbers (excluding Calcutta Street). All of Punjab Street, all of Kabul Street – not Waru Street
  • West of the intersection of Fox Street and Amapur Drive. Including Fox Street and excluding Amapur Drive.

See the list of streets in the Ngaio School zone in the attachment found here.

The Kōwhai Transition to School Programme

Ngaio School’s Transition to School Programme helps you and your child understand how the school works and what to expect at school in the first few weeks. Parents and caregivers attend with your child.

The Kōwhai Transition to School Programme runs on Tuesdays from 1.35pm to 2.45pm. You can contact the office to arrange these sessions or make your bookings via this Google Form .  We encourage you to attend two sessions prior to your child starting school. Additional sessions may be booked if you think this will be beneficial for your child’s transition.

We also invite you and your child to meet with our principal, Raewyn Watson. Please let the office know if you would like to schedule a meeting.
