At Ngaio School we acknowledge the important role sport and physical education plays in providing children with valuable learning experiences and social skills development.  We provide a range of opportunities for all children throughout the year.

The school runs three annual sports events – cross country, swimming sports and athletics. From these events, year 4-6 children can qualify to represent the school at competitions (against schools from the northern suburbs), Wellington and regional events.

Cross Country

Cross country running is one of three annual sports events that take place at school. Cross country usually takes place towards the beginning of term 2. Years 0-2 run a course completely within the school grounds while the course for years 3-6 includes a loop along some of Ngaio’s streets (it does not involve crossing the road). Year 3-6 children can qualify to represent the school at competitions against schools from the northern suburbs, Wellington and regional events. Parents, caregivers, grandparents etc are welcome to come along and watch the event.

Clothing and Footwear

It is important that all students are dressed appropriately and have suitable footwear for running. Classes will be practicing the course and training for fitness before cross country day, so it is best to be prepared. On the day of the races, children can expect to be outside supporting their classmates for at least part of the morning so please have them dressed appropriately for the weather. Teachers will use their judgement regarding how many of the races each class watches.

Spectators

You are welcome to come and see the children running. The best viewing spots are on the terraces next to the astroturf. Once races begin we have to keep all the paths and walkways through the school clear of traffic and spectators, as these are part of the running course.

Athletics Day

Athletics day is one of three annual sports events at the school. It is usually held in term 4 and separated into the junior (years 0-3) and senior school (years 4-6). The event is held at Nairnville Park. There is an opportunity for students in years 4 to 6 to qualify to represent the school at further events such as Northern Zone, Wellington and regional competitions. Everyone is welcome to come along and support the students in these events.

Swimming Sports

Swimming sports are held in term 3 each year at Keith Spry Pool in Johnsonville. Separate events are held for year 4, 5 and 6.

We use both the main pool and teaching pool to cater for children at all swimming levels. For those children that choose to swim competitively times are taken. The fastest swimmers go on to represent Ngaio School at the Northern Zone Swimming Sports.

Parents and caregivers are very welcome to come along and watch.
