Te Reo & Waiata
All children at Ngaio School receive regular lessons with Matua Alwyn Rees, our specialist te reo Maori teacher. In addition to classroom based language and tikanga lessons, children also participate in weekly Waiata (singing) sessions. Children can also choose to join our Kapa Haka Troupe, who practise weekly and perform in assemblies and other special occasions.
In week two of every term we have a Whakatau to welcome new students and teachers to Ngaio School.
In September the Kaka Haka troupe performed in the St Brigid's Kaka Haka Festival, hosted by Newlands College. Ngaio School entered a troupe of 45 children into the Festival The Festival day is always very well supported and is a fabulous opportunity to experience quality Kapa Haka. We would like to acknowledge Matua Alywn for all his fabulous work.
Here are some of the waiata we sing each week. We encourage you to print them off and have a go at home!
